Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin gammadium, gammadia; Greek γαμμάτιον.
Etymology: < (i) post-classical Latin gammadium, plural gammadia (also gammadia, plural gammadiae; both 9th cent.), and its etymon (ii) Byzantine Greek γαμμάτιον < ancient Greek γάμμα gamma n. + -ιον, diminutive suffix, with inserted τ (though γάμμα is indeclinable). N.E.D. (1898) gives only the pronunciation (gæ̆mēi·diǫn) /ɡæˈmeɪdɪɒn/.
1. A swastika (also more fully cross gammadion, gammadion cross). Also: a figure composed of four capital Greek gammas placed back to back in such a way as to form a voided Greek cross.
