Forms: 1600s datisme, 1600s– datism.
Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin Datismus; Greek Δατισμός.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin Datismus (1512 or earlier) or its etymon Hellenistic Greek Δατισμός broken speech < ancient Greek Δᾶτις , apparently the name of Datis (Old Iranian *Dâtiya- ), the Median commander of the Persian forces at the battle of Marathon, who was mocked by Aristophanes for his poor command of Greek + -ισμός -ism suffix. Compare ancient Greek τὸ Δάτιδος μέλος broken Greek, lit. ‘the melody of Datis’ (Aristophanes).
Now rare.
Chiefly in classical contexts: uncultivated or nonstandard language; a fault or irregularity in speaking or writing, esp. such as would be made by a non-native speaker.

1617 J. Minsheu Ἡγεμὼν είς τὰς γλῶσσας: Ductor in Linguas Datisme, when by a heape of Synonimaes wee rehearse the same things.
1791 W. Beloe in tr. Herodotus Hist. III. vi. 91 (note) Χαιρομαι is a barbarism, for the Greeks always say χαιρω. This kind of barbarisms were afterwards called Datisms.
1891 Sat. Rev. 14 Nov. 554/2 We can understand that a small Athenian boy should commit a Datism in Latin; but we cannot see why the Roman boy should make a neuter verb transitive.
1941 Classical Q. 35 34 There remains the Datism ἀντιπραττομένους, which lexicographers, an iron breed, call a middle.
