Origin: Either (i) formed within English, by clipping or shortening. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: Ctenophora n.; Greek κτεν-, κτείς.

Etymology: Either < cten- (in Ctenophora n.), or directly < ancient Greek κτεν-, κτείς (in Byzantine Greek also with nominative κτήν) comb (see cteno- comb. form), after scientific Latin Ctenophora Ctenophora n.Some older sources apparently treat the form ctene as a plural.

Zoology.

Each of the mobile, flattened, paddle-like arrays of fused cilia which are arranged in rows to form the swimming organs of Ctenophora; a comb plate.
