Etymology: Partly (i) < Czechoslovakia, the name of a former country in central Europe (see note at Czechoslovak adj. and n.) + -an suffix, and partly (as adjective) (ii) < Czech adj. + -o- connective + Slovakian adj., and (as noun) (iii) < Czech adj. + -o- connective + Slovakian n. Compare slightly earlier Czechoslovak adj. and Czechoslovak n. O.E.D. Suppl. (1972) gives the pronunciation as (tʃekoslovæ·kiăn) /tʃɛkəʊsləʊˈvækɪən/.
