Etymology: < alkalify v. + -ing suffix2, after French alkalifiant (1789 in the passage translated in quot. 1790). Compare slightly earlier acidifying adj.
Chemistry. Now rare.
Originally: combining with other substances to form alkalies; cf. acidifying adj. In later use more widely: making alkaline.
