Etymology: Apparently < early Scandinavian (compare Icelandic dillindó , dillidó , interjection used to soothe children, ‘hushaby’ (although this is first attested much later: 17th cent.), a derivative (apparently with arbitrary ending) of Old Icelandic dilla to trill, to lull (a child) to sleep, of unknown origin; compare dill v.²), with alteration of the ending after down int.
