Origin: Apparently a borrowing from early Scandinavian.
Etymology: Apparently < early Scandinavian (compare Icelandic dillindó , dillidó , interjection used to soothe children, ‘hushaby’ (although this is first attested much later: 17th cent.), a derivative (apparently with arbitrary ending) of Old Icelandic dilla to trill, to lull (a child) to sleep, of unknown origin; compare dill v.2), with alteration of the ending after down int. (although this is first attested slightly later). Compare later dilli-darling n., dilling n. Perhaps compare also later daffadowndilly n.
Obsolete. rare.
