Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on Latin lexical items. Etymons: crypto- comb. form, -odont comb. form.
Etymology: < crypto- comb. form + -odont comb. form. In senses A. 1 and B. 1 after either scientific Latin Cryptodontia, former family name (R. Owen 1860, in Rep. Brit. Assoc. Adv. Sci. 1859 162) or scientific Latin Cryptodontidae, current family name (S. H. Haughton & A. S. Brink 1954, in Palaeontologia Africana 2 6). In senses A. 2 and B. 2 after scientific Latin Cryptodonta, subclass name (M. Neumayr 1884, as German Cryptodonte, in Sitzungsber. der Kaiserlichen Akad. der Wissensch.: Math.-Naturwissensch. Classe 88 Abt. I. 392); compare also scientific Latin Cryptodon, former genus name ( W. Turton Conchylia Insularum Britannicarum (1822) 12).
