acconj.

Forms: Old English a (transmission error), Old English æac (rare), Old English an (Northumbrian, transmission error), Old English eac (rare), Old English (early Middle English chiefly west midlands) ah, Old English (rare)–early Middle English ach, Old English–Middle English (1500s Scottish) ac, late Old English hach, late Old English–early Middle English æc (rare), early Middle English aac, early Middle English aach, early Middle English acc, early Middle English acke, early Middle English agc, early Middle English ahi (south-west midlands, probably transmission error), early Middle English at (probably transmission error), early Middle English aug, early Middle English (south-west midlands) auh, early Middle English hac, Middle English ak, Middle English ake.
Origin: A word inherited from Germanic.
Etymology: Cognate with Old Saxon ak , Old High German oh , uh , Gothic ak ; further etymology unknown. For a summary of the major suggestions (which all encounter formal or semantic problems), see W. P. Lehmann Gothic Etymol. Dict. (1986) at ak. Compare oc conj. The Old English forms show signs of development under low stress; this seems to have (usually) prevented the raising of short West Germanic a to æ and favoured the lenition of the final velar to a fricative in forms such as ah , ach (compare discussion at I pron.). Occasionally in sense 3, when semantically weak and unstressed, the word is difficult to distinguish from weak forms of Old English ēac ‘moreover, also’ (also attested as ǣc , with smoothing of the diphthong: see eke adv.).
