单词 crustacea
释义

Crustacean.

Brit. /krʌˈsteɪʃə/, U.S. /krəˈsteɪʃə/
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin crustacea, Crustacea.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin crustacea (1656 or earlier) and, in later use, scientific Latin Crustacea, originally an order name ( M. T. Brünnich Zoologiæ fundamenta (1772) 174), use as noun (short for animālia crustacea crustaceous animals) of neuter plural of classical Latin crustāceus , adjective (see crustaceous adj.). Compare French crustacés , plural noun (Cuvier 1798, or earlier). Compare slightly earlier crustaceous adj. 3.
Zoology.
With plural (or occasionally singular) agreement: a large group of mainly aquatic arthropods comprising crabs, lobsters, shrimps, woodlice, barnacles, and many minute forms, which are very diverse in appearance but generally have two pairs of antennae, four or more pairs of limbs, and several other appendages. Also with plural agreement (also in form crustacea): animals of this group (collectively or individually); crustaceans.Long regarded as a class of the phylum Arthropoda, the Crustacea are now considered to warrant the status of a superclass, subphylum, or even phylum.
