1. Originally U.S. A small individual sponge cake baked in a cup-shaped foil or paper container, typically covered with icing or other topping. Frequently with modifying word expressing the type or flavouring of the cake. Cf. fairy cake n.In early use difficult to distinguish from sense 2; perhaps a cake baked from ingredients measured by the cupful that is cooked in small tins or cups.
