† alconden.Origin: Apparently a borrowing from Arabic, combined with a borrowing from Spanish. Etymons: Arabic al, Spanish conde. Etymology: Apparently < Arabic al the + Spanish conde conde n., by analogy with Spanish words of Arabic origin which show initial al- . Compare later conde n. Quot. 1793 purports to be a ‘genuine copy’ of the late Middle English Book of St. Albans, but early editions of this have the plural of alien n. at this point, for which the reading in Dallaway apparently shows a mistaken alteration. N.E.D. (1884) gives an alleged Spanish form alconde as etymon, but there is no evidence that such a word ever existed in Spanish, nor in other Romance languages. Obsolete. rare. society > society and the community > social class > nobility > rank > earl, count, or countess > [noun] > grandee 1793 in J. Dallaway App. v. p. lxxi Prouves of knighthode done before alcondis in honour of renowne.
