Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Paridae.

Etymology: < scientific Latin Paridae, family name < Parus , genus name (Linnaeus Systema Naturæ (ed. 10, 1758) I. 189: see note) + -idae (see -id suffix³).Scientific Latin Parus represents a use as genus name of post-classical Latin parus (masculine), the name of an unidentified bird, a variant (10th cent.; considered by some to be the authentic form, hence its adoption by Linnaeus) of parrus (of uncertain date), alteration of classical Latin parra (feminine) < the same Indo-European base as sparrow n. Latin parra and its diminutive parrula are glossed as colmāse, probably ‘coal titmouse’, in Old English glossaries from the mid 10th cent. onwards.
