Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin costatus.
Etymology: < scientific Latin costatus ribbed, having ridges or a ridged surface (1719 or earlier in botanical, 1752 or earlier in zoological contexts; already in classical Latin in an isolated attestation in sense ‘(of sheep) having ribs’ (Varro), and in post-classical Latin in sense ‘(of metalwork) ribbed, fluted’ (14th cent. in British sources)) < classical Latin costa rib (see costa n.1) + -ātus -ate suffix2. Compare earlier costated adj.
