Combining chiefly with first elements ultimately of Greek origin, but compare foliophagous adj., sociophagous adj. at socio- comb. form 2, with first elements ultimately of Latin origin.

Forming adjectives with the sense ‘that feeds on (the first element)’, as anthropophagous adj., ichthyophagous adj., phytophagous adj., sarcophagous adj.; also in humorous ad hoc formations.
