Etymology: < m- (in mixed adj.2) + ox- (in oxide n.). Compare earlier Magnox n.
A fuel for nuclear reactors consisting of a mixture of plutonium oxide (usually obtained from spent reactor fuel) and uranium oxide. More fully MOX fuel.

1993 Independent on Sunday 14 Nov. (Review Suppl.) 4/2 The plan is to combine plutonium and uranium oxides into an experimental fuel called Mox (Mixed-Oxide Fuel), which BNFL hopes can be burned in conventional reactors.
1995 New Scientist 25 Feb. 5/2 The Russo-German study suggests that MOX fuel from the proposed pilot plant could be used in the BN-600 fast reactor at Beloyarsk.
