Etymology: Origin uncertain. Perhaps < mowyer, variant of mower n.1, with reference to the bird's long scythe-shaped bill: see quot. 1888. Compare sawyer n. 2. N.E.D. (1908) gives the pronunciation as (mōu·yəɹ) /ˈməʊjə(r)/.
U.S. Obsolete. rare.
The long-billed curlew, Numenius americanus (formerly longirostris), which breeds in North America.
