Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Albiōn.
Etymology: < classical Latin Albiōn (Pliny), apparently < the same Celtic base as Gaulish Albio- world (e.g. in the name of the god Albiorix ), Old Welsh elbid world (Welsh elfydd ) < the Indo-European base of classical Latin albus white (see album n.2). Compare Hellenistic Greek Ἁλουίων (Ptolemy), Byzantine Greek Ἀλβίων (4th cent.).The Celtic base underlying the name probably originally denoted the world above ground, illuminated by the sun, as opposed to the dark underworld.
