Etymology: < consecrated adj. + virgin n. Compare post-classical Latin virgo consecrata (6th cent.), French vierge consacrée (1579 or earlier), both rare as a set phrase.
Christian Church.
A woman who has taken a vow of perpetual virginity and is regarded as symbolically betrothed to God or Christ; spec. (in the Roman Catholic Church) such a woman who has undergone the rite of consecration; a member of the Order of Virgins.The rite of consecration of virgins was used in the ancient church but fell into disuse in the Middle Ages. It was reintroduced in 1970 by Pope Paul VI through the publication of Canon 604.
