Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: Latin concertātiōn- , concertātiō ; concert v., -ation suffix.
Etymology: Partly (in sense 1) < classical Latin concertātiōn-, concertātiō strife, conflict, controversy, dispute ( < concertāt- , past participial stem of concertāre to fight, contend, to dispute (see concert v.) + -iō -ion suffix1), and partly (in sense 2) < its ulterior elements concert v. + -ation suffix. Compare Middle French concertation sports contest (only attested in a small number of examples from 1541 to 1547).
