单词 amoy
释义

Amoyadj.n.

Brit. /əˈmɔɪ/, U.S. /ɑˈmɔɪ/, /əˈmɔɪ/
Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Amoy.
Etymology: < Amoy (Chinese Xiàmén), the name in English of the island and city of Xiamen in Fujian province, south-east China (1588 or earlier) < a Chinese (Hokkien) regional (Amoy) pronunciation of the characters corresponding to (Mandarin) Xiàmén, literally ‘mansion gate’, the official form of the name (17th cent. or earlier); a homophonous form with the literal meaning ‘lower gate’ (with a different initial character) is also found in local popular use.A late 19th-cent. source suggests that in English the name could be pronounced with initial /ei-/, which comes closer to the sound of the Hokkien form of the initial character than the usual modern pronunciation. With this compare also French Émoui, the name of Amoy (18th cent. or earlier).
A. adj.
