释义

Brit. /kəmˈpɛtᵻtə/, U.S. /kəmˈpɛdədər/

Etymology: < French compétiteur (16th cent. in Littré), or its source Latin competītor , one of several who aim at the same object, a fellow-candidate, rival, agent-noun < competĕre in its active sense: see compete v.2 The accentuation indicates adoption < French rather than Latin, which would naturally have given compeˈtitor, ˈcompetitor.
