However, although the scribe of MS Cambridge substituted gestening n., jousting n. is first attested later, and the context does not securely suggest a sense ‘tournament’. Since the Old French version of Floris et Blancheflur, verses 1568–9, has Li amiraus en sa justice Cent et cinquante rois a mise ‘The emir has made 150 kings subject to him’, the edition by A. B. Taylor (1927) suggests a sense ‘administration, rule’ and a derivation < Old French juste just adj. + -en suffix⁵ + -ing suffix¹, after Old French justice justice n.
