单词 common place
释义

Common Placen.1

Forms: late Middle English Comun Plece, late Middle English–1500s Commune Place, late Middle English–1600s Common Place, 1500s–1600s Comon Place.
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French commune place.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman commune place Court of Common Pleas (early 14th cent.) < commun common adj. + place place n.1Compare post-classical Latin Locus Communis Court of Common Pleas (1488 in an Irish source), placeum commune , in the same sense (1561 in a British source). Superseded by Common Pleas n. in the 16th cent. By this time the pronunciation of the stem vowel of place and pleas would have coalesced (as /ɛː/) in some speech (compare the form Comun Plece), creating conditions for potential confusion between Common Place and Common Pleas.
Obsolete.
Chiefly with the. The Court of Common Pleas, formerly one of the three superior courts of common law in England and Wales; = Common Pleas n. 1a. Also more fully Court of Common Place.
