Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek ἀλαζών.
Etymology: < ancient Greek ἀλαζών boaster, perhaps < Ἀλαζῶνες (plural), the name of a Thracian tribe mentioned in Herodotus. Compare alazony n., eiron n.Compare earlier use in English as the name of a character in a play:a1635 T. Randolph Muses Looking-glasse iii. iv. 62 in Poems (1638) Such as Alazon is, use their own Tongues, While reall worth hears her own praise, not speaks it. Alazon is mentioned by the Latin author Plautus as the title of a Greek comedy.
A stock character in ancient Greek comedy characterized by arrogance, misplaced self-confidence, and a failure to recognize irony. Hence in extended use: a character of this type. Contrasted with eiron n.See note at eiron n.
