Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French milicien.
Etymology: < French milicien a member of a troop of citizens raised to reinforce the regular army (1725; 1937 in specific application to Republican forces in the Spanish Civil War), a member of the Milice of Vichy (1943) < milice milice n. + -ien -ian suffix.
French History.
A member of a troop of citizens raised to reinforce the regular army. In later use: spec. a member of the Milice, the force employed by the Vichy government of 1940–4 to repress internal dissent.
