Etymology: < scientific Latin Codiaeum, genus name (G. E. Rumphius Herbarium Amboinense (1743) IV. 65) < Ternate godiho, kodiho, the name of the plant + scientific Latin -eum (after classical Latin nouns in -ēum).

Any of the tropical evergreen plants comprising the genus Codiaeum (family Euphorbiaceae); esp. C. variegatum, which is native to Australasia and Indo-Malaya and frequently cultivated for its colourful variegated foliage. Also (in form Codiaeum): the genus itself. C. variegatum is also called croton and was previously included in that genus. Cf. Croton n. 2.Valid publication of the genus name: A.-H. De Jussieu De Euphorbiacearum Generibus (1824) 80.
