Etymology: < classical Latin cōdex trunk of a tree, wooden tablet, book, account book, code of laws, in post-classical Latin also (in plural) collection of scriptural writings (4th cent.), (in singular) printed book (15th cent.), variant of caudex (see caudex n.). Compare earlier code n. and codice n.Compare Middle French codice book (1512), French codex book (early 17th cent.), collection of pharmaceutical receipts or prescriptions (1651).
