Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: transsexual n., -ism suffix.
Etymology: < transsexual n. + -ism suffix, after transvestitism n. Compare earlier transsexuality n. 2 and slightly later transsexual adj. 2. Compare also earlier bisexualism n. 3 and homosexualism n.
The state or quality of being born with the physical characteristics of one sex but identifying as belonging to the other sex; the fact of living (esp. after sex reassignment) or wishing to live as a member of the opposite sex. Cf. transsexual adj. 2.Before the coinage of the term transsexual, those feeling a strong desire to live as a member of the opposite sex were often described as exhibiting a pronounced form of transvestism (see quot. 1953), although the two are now usually regarded as separate and distinct phenomena. While transsexualism remains the most widely accepted term among transsexual people, academics, and medical practitioners, use of the word transsexuality in this sense is increasingly common.
