A short coda, typically forming a linking passage; spec. (a) (in a fugue) a brief passage of free counterpoint separating one thematic entry from the next (cf. episode n. 4); (b) (in sonata form) the musical material which concludes the exposition, following the presentation of the second subject or thematic group.

(ed. 2) iv. v. 295 A short Phrase, or any other passage, which does not constitute part of a regular Section, but serves to connect one Section or Period to another, is termed in this Work a Codetta. The term is used by Sabbatini,..in his Trattato sopra le Fughe, in a more limited sense.
