Primary stress is retained by the usual stressed syllable of the preceding element and vowels may be reduced accordingly; see e.g. allomorph n.1
Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Greek -μορϕος, μορϕή.
Etymology: < ancient Greek -μορϕος, combining form (in e.g. πολύμορϕος polymorph n., τετράμορϕος tetramorph n.) of μορϕή form, perhaps cognate with classical Latin forma form n.Combined with first elements ultimately of Greek origin. Attested from the first half of the 19th cent.; formations become numerous from the later 19th cent. From the beginning such formations are especially common in scientific disciplines such as chemistry, mineralogy, and biology (e.g. isomorph n., polymorph n., pseudomorph n.). Uses in art and archaeology (e.g. anthropomorph n., biomorph n., phyllomorph n., physicomorph n. at physico- comb. form , skeuomorph n., zoomorph n.) are associated chiefly with late 19th-cent. antiquarian writings. Uses in genetics (e.g. amorph n., antimorph n., hypomorph n. at hypo- prefix 2) date from the 1930s and are associated chiefly with the work of H. J. Muller (see Proc. 6th Internat. Congr. Genetics I.).
