Origin: Apparently a variant or alteration of another lexical item; perhaps modelled on a French lexical item, or perhaps modelled on an Italian lexical item. Etymon: trabeated adj.
Etymology: Apparently an alteration of trabeated adj., perhaps after French travée space between two joists (1356; < tref beam (see trave n.) + -ée (see -ate suffix1), with remodelling after the ulterior etymon of the parent noun, classical Latin trabs : see trave n.) or Italian travata joist (1550). Perhaps compare Italian travato reinforced or upheld by beams (late 19th cent.).With the forms traveated, traviated perhaps compare trevis n.
Architecture.
Having or constructed with horizontal beams or similar long square pieces of stone or another material, esp. as lintels or entablatures supported on vertical columns or posts (as opposed to using arches); spec. designating a flat ceiling supported on transverse beams, by which it is divided into bays; = trabeated adj.
