Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French travestissement.
Etymology: < French travestissement action of disguising oneself (1694; early 20th cent. in psychoanalysis; 1651 in the sense ‘misleading appearance given to a written text’), literally ‘disguise, travesty’ < travestiss- , lengthened stem of travestir travesty v. + -ment -ment suffix. Compare slightly later travestiment n.
The action or an act of dressing in the clothes of the opposite sex, esp. in order to play a particular dramatic or theatrical role. Cf. travesty n. 2, travestiment n. 2.
