Etymology: < close adj. + stool n., so called on account of the enclosed compartment containing the chamber pot or other receptacle.
Now chiefly historical.
A piece of furniture enclosing a chamber pot, typically a type of chair or small chest having a lid concealing a seat with a hole used in the same way as a toilet. Cf. commode n. 4a.
