单词 resouvenance
释义

resouvenancen.

Forms: late Middle English resouenaunce.
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French resovenance.
Etymology: < Middle French resovenance (French ressouvenance ) recollection, memory (c1350 and 1365 in two apparently isolated attestations, subsequently from 1556) < resovenir to remember, recall (c1165 in Old French, originally used impersonally ( < re- + sovenir : see souvenir n.) + -ance -ance suffix; compare Old French resovenant that remembers or recognizes (13th cent. in an isolated attestation). Compare slightly later sovenance n.The sole example of the word in Middle English apparently shows scribal substitution for resonance n., taken by the editor of this text (A. Henry: EETS 288, 1992) to be the authorial reading, since it both corresponds to the reading of the French original, and makes much better sense in the context (the nymph Ecco is mentioned slightly later in the text).
Obsolete. rare.
