Primary stress is retained by the usual stressed syllable of the preceding element and vowels may be reduced accordingly; see e.g. monomer n.
Origin: A borrowing from Greek; partly modelled on a German lexical item, and partly modelled on a French lexical item. Etymon: Greek -μερής.
Etymology: < ancient Greek -μερής (see -mere comb. form), after German -mer, French -mère. Compare -mere comb. form.The earliest English words with this terminal element are either loans < German or French (the first being isomer n., polymer n., adopted in the mid 19th cent.) or based on German or French models (e.g. metamer n.1). English formations are found from the early 20th cent.
