单词 cnidaria
释义

Cnidarian.

Brit. /(k)nɪˈdɛːrɪə/, /(k)nʌɪˈdɛːrɪə/, U.S. /naɪˈdɛriə/
Origin: A borrowing from Latin; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymon: Latin Cnidaria.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Cnidaria (see quot. 1884) < ancient Greek κνίδη nettle (see cnida n.) + classical Latin -āria , plural of -ārium -ary suffix1 (see -a -a suffix2), after German Cnidarien (1883 in the passage translated in quot. 1884). Compare French cnidaires , former subclass name ( H. Milne-Edwards Hist. nat. des coralliaires (1857) I. 95; compare quot. 1861).
Zoology.
With plural agreement: a phylum of aquatic acoelomate invertebrates comprising the jellyfishes, sea anemones, and colonial forms such as corals, characterized by a tube- or cup-shaped body with a single opening ringed with stinging tentacles, and typically existing as either sedentary polyps or free-swimming medusae. Also: animals of this group (collectively or individually); cnidarians. This group was regarded as a subphylum of the Coelenterata until the Ctenophora were removed, after which it became effectively synonymous with Coelenterata.
