Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin aedituāt-, aedituāre.
Etymology: < classical Latin aedituāt-, past participial stem (see -ate suffix3) of aedituāre to act as a sacristan < aedituus person who has charge of a temple, sacristan, alteration (after tuērī to watch over: see tutor n.) of aeditumus (also aeditimus ), in same sense ( < aedes building, temple (see edifice n.) + -timus , suffix: see maritime adj.), translating νεωκόρος ‘temple-keeper’ in Acts 19:35, where the ‘town-clerk’ of Ephesus speaks of that city as ‘temple-keeper’ (King James Bible: ‘worshipper’) of Diana.
