单词 matchcoat
释义

matchcoatn.

Brit. /ˈmatʃˌkəʊt/, U.S. /ˈmætʃˌkoʊt/
Forms: 1600s mach coat, 1600s mach-cot, 1600s matchco, 1600s match coate, 1600s matchcore, 1600s– matchcoat, 1700s– match coat, 1700s– match-coat, 1800s matchicoat.
Origin: A borrowing from Virginia Algonquian. Etymon: Virginia Algonquian matchkore.
Etymology: < Virginia Algonquian matchkore deerskin robe < Proto-Algonquian *mat- (empty root) + *-ixtoθ- robe, blanket. The oldest recorded form matchcore (see quot. 1612 at sense 1) reflects the etymon; the predominant later form shows assimilation of the final syllable to coat n. by folk etymology. Compare matachia n.Despite the similarity in form, the influence of the distinct word machicote n., or its Ojibwa etymon, is unlikely.
U.S. Now chiefly historical.
1. A kind of coat formerly worn by North American Indians, originally made of furs, later of coarse woollen cloth (as supplied by white traders).
