Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymons: French advoué, avoé.
Etymology: < Middle French advoué, advoé, variant of avoé (see avowe n.; compare discussion at ad- prefix).This is apparently an independent later borrowing of the same French word borrowed earlier as avowe n.
1. A guardian, protector, or patron of a church or religious house; (Ecclesiastical Law) one holding the right to present a member of the clergy to a particular benefice or living. Cf. advowson n. Now chiefly historical.
