Origin: Probably a borrowing from Middle Low German. Etymon: Middle Low German mȫme.
Etymology: Probably either < Middle Low German mȫme, moeme (already in Old Saxon as mōma ; German regional (Low German) Möhm , Mööm ), or < an unattested cognate in Middle Dutch (compare early modern Dutch mome , moeme ); compare Old High German muoma (Middle High German muome , German (archaic) Muhme ); probably ultimately < an ablaut variant of the Indo-European base of classical Latin mamma mother, grandmother, breast (see mama n.1 and discussion at that entry). Compare mone n.3
Obsolete.

Origin: Of unknown origin.
Etymology: Origin unknown; perhaps related to mum n.1, although this would present phonological difficulties. Apparently not related to French môme little child (1821).The derivative momish adj. is attested slightly earlier.
Now archaic and rare.
A fool, a dolt. Also in extended use.In quot. 1902: a buffoon, a jester.

Etymology: < Middle French mome slanderer (c1550) or its etymon ancient Greek Μῶμος Momus n. N.E.D. (1907) gives the pronunciation as (mōum) /məʊm/.
