Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; probably modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: chemical adj., -graphy comb. form.
Etymology: < chemi- (in chemical adj.) + -graphy comb. form, probably after German Chemigraphie (1852 or earlier). Compare earlier chemitype n. and also chemio- , variant of chemo- comb. form.
Printing. Now historical.
A method of relief printing in which chemicals are used to etch a metal plate on which a drawing has been made, or (in later use) on to which a photograph has been transferred. Cf. chemitype n.Zinc was the metal most commonly used.
