Etymology: < French chamosite (P. Berthier 1820, in Ann. des Mines 5 393, as chamoisite ), < Chamoson , earlier Chamoison , the name of the village in the Valais, Switzerland, where first found: see -ite suffix¹. Berthier revised the spelling to chamosite in 1827 ( Ann. Chim. Phys. 35 258).
