Forms: Also 1500s lumbe, 1600s lume, 1700s lumb.
Etymology: Of obscure etymology; possibly an application of Old French lum light ( < Latin lūmen); compare the uses of French lumière in the sense of ‘aperture, passage’. The resemblance in form and sense to Welsh llumon chimney is noteworthy.
