Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian cavolo nero.
Etymology: < Italian cavolo nero, lit. ‘black kale’ < cavolo cabbage, kale (late 13th cent.; < classical Latin caulis stem, stalk, cabbage: see caul n.2) + nero black (a1292) < classical Latin niger black (see niger n.1).
A hardy variety of kale with dark green leaves, used chiefly in Tuscan cookery; also called black cabbage, black kale.
