单词 gobby
释义

gobbyn.

Brit. /ˈɡɒbi/, U.S. /ˈɡɑbi/
Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: gob n.1, -y suffix6.
Etymology: Origin uncertain. Perhaps < gob n.1 (compare gob n.1 1b) + -y suffix6; compare gob v.4 The frequency of attributive use could also suggest that the word was originally an adjective (in -y suffix1). Compare later gob n.5 and gobshite n.It has been suggested that the first element was originally a shortening of a personal name, sometimes given as Gobbles, but this cannot be substantiated.
Nautical slang. Now rare (perhaps disused).
A sailor, an ordinary seaman; spec. (British) one assigned to duties on the quarterdeck. Also (British): a coastguard. Frequently (and in earliest use) attributive. Cf. gob n.5
