Etymology: < classical Latin adulterātor person who counterfeits or debases (the coinage) (2nd cent. a.d. in legal context), in post-classical Latin also adulterer (13th cent. in a British source) < adulterāt- , past participial stem of adulterāre adulter v. + -or -or suffix. Compare French adultérateur person who adulterates or debases (1552 in Middle French). Compare earlier adulterer n.
1. A person who adulterates or debases by contamination; spec. one who makes something poorer in quality or unusable for its original purpose by adding another substance.
