Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: Celto- comb. form, -logist comb. form.
Etymology: < Celto- comb. form + -logist comb. form. Compare the French and German forms cited at Celtologue n. Compare earlier Celticist n.Compare also French Celtologie (1859 or earlier), German Keltologie (1847 or earlier), both denoting the field of Celtic studies and now the usual words for the discipline in these languages; the corresponding English formation Celtology (compare quots. 1878 and 1945 at Celto- comb. form 2) remained rare.
A student of or expert in Celtic languages or Celtic studies; a Celticist.
