Origin: Probably a borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin māchinātor.
Etymology: Probably < classical Latin māchinātor engineer, contriver of plots < māchināt- , past participial stem of māchinārī (see machinate v.) + -or -or suffix. Compare Middle French, French machinateur plotter (1409), engineer (1607; now rare or obsolete), Italian macchinatore plotter (14th cent.), glossed by Florio (1598) as ‘..a conspirer, an inuentor, an author, a maker of engins’ (the non-pejorative senses are now rare or obsolete).
A person who machinates; a contriver, intriguer, plotter, or schemer.
