Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin māchināt-, māchinārī.
Etymology: < classical Latin māchināt-, past participial stem (compare -ate suffix3) of māchinārī invent, contrive < māchina machine n., after ancient Greek μηχανᾶσθαι . The classical Latin and ancient Greek words both have a range of senses from ‘make by art’ through ‘contrive’ to ‘plot’, of which the pejorative senses have had by far the strongest influence on the English word. Compare machination n. (in which senses machination n. 3, 4 are not pejorative) and machine v.For the pronunciation with /ʃ/ see machination n.
