Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Czech. Partly a borrowing from French. Etymons: Czech akathisie; French akathisie.
Etymology: < Czech akathisie (L. Haškovec 1901, in Sborník klinický 3 196) and French akathisie (L. Haškovec 1901, in Sborník klinický 3 200 and Revue neurologique 9 1107), both < ancient Greek ἀ- a- prefix6 + Hellenistic Greek κάθισις sitting ( < ancient Greek καθίζειν to cause to sit (see cathisma n.) + -σις -sis suffix), with remodelling of the ending after words in -ia suffix1.
Medicine.
Inability to sit down or to remain seated, resulting from a subjective need or desire to move, frequently accompanied by sensations of muscular twitching, and often occurring as a side effect of the use of certain psychoactive drugs; an instance of this. Also in extended use.
